You wake up at 3 a.m., and your mind is suddenly racing. Deadlines. Conversations. That one thing you forgot. This is very common. In the early morning, often around 3 or 4 a.m., your brain naturally increases cortisol, a stress hormone that helps prepare you to wake up. That biological shift can feel like a surge of urgent thinking. Thinking at 3 a.m. is rarely your most reliable thinking. It does not mean something is wrong. Your brain is transitioning toward wakefulness.
